Imagine this: a sleepy English town on a normal weekday in 1991, until suddenly, word spreads that everyone should stay indoors. Why? Because four fully grown lions are loose and prowling the streets! Welcome to Grimsby, a small port town on England’s northeast coast, generally known for its fishing industry — not for its lions on the lam.
This isn’t just some quirky urban legend; this actually happened. Grimsby, typically a peaceful place with its maritime history and sea breezes, suddenly found itself in the middle of an absurd scene: four circus lions had escaped their cages, and a very unusual hero would come to the rescue.

How Four Lions Came to Roam Grimsby
The bizarre episode began when Chipperfield’s Circus, a traveling circus, made an unscheduled stop in Grimsby to take a rest. Among the convoy of trailers and animal cages, something went terribly wrong. Somehow, four adult lions escaped their enclosures and wandered out into the quiet streets of Grimsby, causing panic among the locals and putting an unusual twist on the town’s daily routine.
“I looked out my window, and there was a lion padding down the street like it owned the place! I thought I was dreaming,” one Grimsby resident recalled. Another local, who saw the lion near her front yard, said, “I thought my kids were playing a prank on me. Lions? In Grimsby? Absolutely mad!”
“Lock Your Doors”: The Call for an Emergency Response
Understandably, this wasn’t your typical day in Grimsby, and local police and animal control were quickly called to the scene. Through the police radio, the message was sent out: “Everyone stay indoors; we have lions on the loose!”
For more than an hour, the lions explored Grimsby’s roads, yards, and even gardens, creating a surreal experience for unsuspecting townspeople.
Michael Strandt, a resident of Grimsby, faced the animals head-on while trying to protect his wife and daughter. “The next thing, this lion was pounding after me. It leaped up to me, grabbing the top of my shoulder, and pulled me down,” he recalled. Strandt needed 24 stitches after the lion bit his neck, but he was lucky enough to survive, thanks to local police officer Ron Harrison. The officer managed to distract the lion by ramming it with his patrol car, likely saving Strandt’s life.
And still the lions were on the prowl…
Clown To The Rescue
As panic set in, an animal control team arrived armed with nets, tranquilizer guns, and… a clown.
Yes, you read that correctly. The circus staff, desperate for extra hands to help contain the lions, called in a clown — an unlikely but ultimately heroic member of the circus troupe. The clown, who to this day has never been identified, played a key part the lions retrieval.
One of the lions was seen charging towards Victoria Street Bus Station – so the clown trapped it into an alleyway using a chair and a stick.
Sergeant Stewart Bellamy of the Grimsby Police Station shared his amazement at the clown’s bravery, saying, “I was absolutely terrified. The clown was very, very brave.” Bellamy added a surreal image to the tale, describing his view from the police car as he watched the clown, dressed in full costume, attempting to corral a lion in the alley near the Victoria Street Bus Station. At one point, the clown even trapped one lion with his chair in a narrow passage, working with Bellamy, who blocked the lion’s escape path using his patrol car.
Despite the absurdity, the clown’s actions were instrumental. Bellamy admitted, “I thought that was it, we had the lion. But then the clown informed me there were three more on the loose.” The realization that this was just the start of their lion roundup made for a long and challenging morning.

A Legendary Tale for Grimsby (and Beyond)
Once the lions were back in their cages, Grimsby collectively sighed in relief — and laughter. The clown had become a local legend, the unlikeliest hero of a scene straight out of a surreal comedy.
In a world of oddball stories, the Great Grimsby Lion Escape — and the brave clown who took them on – prove that sometimes, life really is stranger than fiction.
