The Strange Case of the “Demonic” Sea Lions

Something strange is happening off the coast of California. Sea lions—normally curious, intelligent, and mostly indifferent to humans—are becoming aggressive. Not just agitated, but dangerous. People are being chased. Some are being bitten. Videos show animals lurching onto beaches or swimming at full speed toward boats.

What Is Domoic Acid?

Domoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin made by certain species of algae, especially those in the Pseudo-nitzschiagenus. Under normal conditions, these algae exist in low, relatively harmless concentrations. But when conditions are right—usually warmer waters with excess nutrients from agricultural runoff—they bloom. And that’s when the problems start.

The toxin itself isn’t dangerous to the algae. But when shellfish and small fish like anchovies or sardines eat the algae, the toxin builds up in their bodies. From there, it climbs the food chain. And at the top of that chain? Sea lions.


Why Sea Lions Are Losing It

California sea lions are smart predators, and their diet includes a lot of those small, filter-feeding fish. When domoic acid levels spike, sea lions unknowingly ingest large amounts of the neurotoxin. Their brains pay the price.

Scientists have been studying domoic acid poisoning in sea lions since the 1990s, when mass strandings and seizures began appearing along the California coast. The symptoms are terrifying: disorientation, tremors, seizures, and bizarre, hyper-aggressive behavior.

In severe cases, the toxin causes permanent brain damage, especially in the hippocampus, which plays a crucial role in memory and spatial navigation. Think of it as marine Alzheimer’s—except it progresses fast and comes with a side of violent confusion.


Attacks on Humans

While sea lions have bitten humans in the past, recent incidents tied to domoic acid exposure are more erratic and hostile. In 2023 and 2024, several videos circulated online showing sea lions lunging at beachgoers, chasing surfers, and even trying to leap into small boats.

These aren’t animals defending themselves or their young. They’re disoriented predators with scrambled brains, reacting unpredictably to stimuli. In one case, a sea lion leapt from the water and knocked a paddleboarder into the sea. In another, a runner on a Santa Cruz beach was bitten without warning.

Officials have issued warnings to keep a safe distance from beached or wandering sea lions and to report any abnormal behavior. But that’s tricky when these animals are showing up where they shouldn’t be—like in parking lots, boardwalks, or public beaches in broad daylight.


Not Just Sea Lions

Sea lions are the most visible victims of domoic acid, but they’re not alone. The toxin has affected sea otterspelicansdolphins, and even humans.

In humans, domoic acid can cause a condition known as Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning. Symptoms range from nausea and confusion to short-term memory loss and, in severe cases, coma or death. The U.S. now monitors shellfish closely and shuts down fisheries when domoic acid levels spike. But the sea lions? They don’t get a warning label on their food.


Climate Change Is Making It Worse

What Happens to the Sick Animals?

In chronic cases, MRI scans of affected sea lions show brain atrophy, especially in areas associated with memory and learning. Those animals may survive in captivity but can’t be released. Some have been used in medical studies, offering rare insight into how neurotoxins impact memory.

Others, sadly, are euthanized to prevent suffering.


Are Humans at Risk?

While the idea of a “rage virus” from the ocean sounds like science fiction, the reality is more complicated. No, domoic acid isn’t contagious. But its effects ripple outward.

Sea lions are large, strong, and fast. An aggressive one can seriously injure a person. And as blooms get worse, the number of exposed animals increases. Add in how popular California beaches are, and it’s not hard to imagine more human-animal run-ins.

Also, the seafood supply isn’t immune. Filter-feeders like mussels, clams, and scallops are monitored carefully, but it only takes one missed warning to cause an outbreak of food poisoning. The threat isn’t massive, but it’s real.


What Can Be Done?

Scientists and environmental agencies are working on the problem, but it’s a tough one. Domoic acid is colorless, odorless, and heat-stable—meaning cooking doesn’t destroy it. And because algae blooms are driven by a mix of climate and human factors, there’s no single fix.

Efforts are underway to:

  • Improve ocean monitoring systems
  • Warn the public about beach closures or dangerous wildlife
  • Reduce agricultural runoff into the ocean
  • Study how long-term exposure impacts marine species

But until conditions in the ocean change, the threat remains.
